Readers Carol Cahill and her daughter Niamh had always shopped in stores they thought were appropriate for their age. Carol, 52, would not set foot in Miss Selfridge unless she was shopping for her daughter - and as far as Niamh, 19, was concerned, shops like Marks & Spencer were strictly for gifts.

So,we decided to show the pair what they were missing. Carol, a temp, who is divorced and lives in Beckenham, Kent, says: "I love shopping with Niamh but when we go into the kind of shops she loves - Topshop and H&M - I completely switch off looking for myself and solely look for stuff I know would suit her.
