AMERICAN Nick Watney tied the course record - and Ireland's Shane Lowry put himself in contention - in a dramatic first day at the World Golf HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai yesterday.

Watney, who won this year's Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines in California, carded just one bogey during his virtually flawless eightunder-par 64 trip around Sheshan International Golf Club to top the leaderboard from Lowry, Ryan Moore and Martin Kaymer.
