The number of people who were locked up last year for failing to pay fines hit 2,520 - almost twice that of the previous year.

And 54 of these were householders who didn't pay their TV licence.

Figures for the first six months of this year showed 186 people were imprisoned for an average period of 20 days for non-payment of debt. The figure for the whole of last year was 276.
