THE BBC is like the monarchy - if it didn't exist we would never invent it. But it's been around for so long that life just wouldn't be the same without it.

Unfortunately that may not be enough to force pounds 180 a year out of every household in the country, as the BBC's latest plans require. Public patience with quaint historical institutions has a limit, and a licence fee above the minimum weekly wage could test that patience to destruction.
