NOBODY who remembers the terrible pictures of the Ethiopian famine in 1984 will want to see such suffering again.

TV footage of families racked by malnutrition, of children too weak to stand, of doctors forced to choose who should live, is seared on my memory. The worldwide response - though late - was magnificent.
