BLACK people are eight times more likely to be stopped and searched by police than whites, official figures show.

But in Essex - where Jermain Defoe was arrested - they are nearly 10 TIMES more likely to be stopped, according to Home Office statistics. Police can stop and search people under two laws. Section 60 of the Criminal Justice Act allows searches where there is "reasonable suspicion" a crime has been or will be committed.
